Getting Started with Organize!

When you start Organize! for the first time, all buttons are blank and the tree list on the left is empty (except for "new folder", which is explained later). In the lower-right corner of Organize! is an empty text field that you can use for keeping quick notes.

Organize! has four menu items, File, Options, Tree and Help. These are explained in more detail later.

In order to make the best use of Organize!, you will need to set up the buttons and the tree list with the documents, files and programs you use frequently. It is a good idea to have your most-used applications and documents attached to one of the fifteen buttons on the right side of the screen, so that these are available very quickly.

Customize the Buttons

To set up a button, click on it with the right mouse button. You will be presented with a menu:

Setup This allows you to set the file that is attached to the button as well as the label that appears on it.
Change File Select this to change the file associated with the button without changing any other attribute, such as picture or label.
Change Label Select this to change the label on the button without changing any other attribute.
Change Picture Select this to set the picture for a button. You can select .BMP or .ICO files.
Clear This menu item will clear the picture, label and file from a button, leaving it blank.

When you close Organize!, all of the button settings are saved, so next time you start Organize! you do not need to re-setup these buttons. If you wish to save the settings before you exit Organize!, you can select File from the menu, then Save Settings.

Customize the Tree List

The tree list at the left shows a list of folders and, within those folders, items. The items correspond to documents, files and programs that you have associated with them. You could, for example, create a folder named "Maps," and within that folder, a list of graphics files of maps. Furthermore, you may insert folders within folders. An example of this might be a folder for maps, and within that, area names. Each area name folder could contain one or more maps for that area.

There is no organizational requirement on the list. You may set it up in any way that makes sense to you. Also, the files that are contained in a single Organize! folder can be anywhere on your computer. They do not need to be in the same directory.

To start the tree, you may set up a folder or an item. If you set up a folder, you will need to set up items within that folder.

If you want to add a new folder, double-click the "new folder" line in the list, or select Tree from the menu, then New Folder. You will be presented with a message where you enter the name for the folder. This name is what will appear on the list, so make it descriptive. Click Ok, and your new folder will appear in the list!

To add an item, select the folder where you would like the item to appear. Then, press Ctrl-N on the keyboard, or click the right-mouse button and select Insert Item, or select New Entry from the Tree menu. You will then need to select the file to run from the new menu item. Once you have selected the file, you will then be prompted to name the new item. Again, make it descriptive. This is what will be shown in the list.

When you close Organize!, all of the tree list settings are saved, so next time you start Organize! you do not need to re-setup these items. If you wish to save the settings before you exit Organize!, you can select File from the menu, then Save Settings.

Using Organize!

When you are finished setting up the buttons and tree list of Organize! you will want to make use of these.

To activate an application or document that you have attached to a button, simply click on that button and the application will start.

To activate an application or a document that is in the tree list, highlight the item and press Enter, or simply double-click that item. The application will start.

Remember: Delete only deletes a file from Organize! It does not delete anything from your hard drive.

Preferences

On the main menu is a new menu item, "Preferences." This item presents you with a preferences screen. On this screen, you can select these options:

Select setup to open by default - By selecting something other than "none" here, the next time you open Organize! this setup will be loaded without prompting you.

Minimize Organize! when another application is launched - If you check this box, whenever you launch an application from Organize!, Organize! will be minimized.

Once you have selected your options, click Apply to apply them, or simply click Ok. Clicking Cancel will disregard any changes you made on the options screen.

If you select a default setup from this screen, and delete that setup without de-selecting it, when you start Organize! you will get an error message that says it couldn't find a setup file. To correct this, simply open the preferences window and select "none."

HTML Directory Viewer

Under the file menu is the menu item "HTML Directory View." This item allows you to create an HTML document that displays the contents of a selected directory. Selecting this menu item brings up a dialog box with two buttons. The first button, Select Directory, allows you to select the directory you wish to view with HTML. At this point, you must select a file within the directory you wish to view.

Once you have selected the directory, click on the View HTML button. This will launch your default HTML viewer (Netscape, IE, etc.) and open the file that was just created. The file name is always HTMLVIEW.HTM, and is saved in that directory.

At the beginning of the file is an index of files within the directory. If the file is a .TXT file, the contents of that file will be loaded into the HTML document. IF the file is a .GIF or .JPG file, the picture from that file will be displayed in the HTML document. Any other file type is going to have a link to it in this table of contents. Entries in the table of contents for .TXT, .GIF and .JPG files will go to that part of the HTML document when clicked.

You can create an HTML view of a directory, and then add that file to the tree view or to a button for a quickly accessible index of a directory.
