From: Paul, Brett Subject: Bamf [22] Not out of the woods yet As you speak to each other, the men facing you look very confused. Brady loops his pinky finger through the hilt of the sword and draws it out that way, letting it fall to the ground. He holds his open hands out like the rest of you. The man recognizes your surrender (or at least your lack of malice), and takes a step forward, covered by his two friends. The lead man picks up Brady's sword and steps back again to his friends. Once next to his friends, he looks down momentarily at the sword he just collected. His eyes open wide, and he looks quickly back to Brady. His eyes narrow, as though he has solved a puzzle, and doesn't like the answer. He again points his swordpoint at Brady and says, "League dish in." When Brady doesn't move, he repeats, "League dish in," flicking the tip of the sword from Brady to the ground. Brady still doesn't move. The man takes a step further back and puts his hand on his friend's shoulder. He says, "Steffan, league dish in." The younger man looks puzzled, but then lies down on the ground. "Goot. Shtay auf." He is clearly speaking German. The younger man gets back up and brushes himself off. All the while, the leader does not take his eyes off Brady. Again, to Brady, he says, "League dish in. Alla." He then sweeps his gaze across the rest of you, pointing to each and then the ground. Seeing that the men have swords and know how to use them, you seem to think it wise to listen to them, though you are wary. You lie down on the ground, but keep an eye on them. The two younger troops move forward and clasp Brady's hands behind his back. One takes a leather strap and ties Brady's wrists together with some sort of handcuff-knot. Brady finds himself unable to move his arms apart. Once done, they stand Brady up and stand on either side of him, grabbing his arms. The leader kicks dirt over your fire, saying, "Hole dynasashen und commit." He is motioning for you all to follow. The two men with Brady lead him towards the town. The leader is waiting for the rest of you to follow, one sword in hand, and Brady's sword in his scabbard. He seems to want you to bring your stuff. - Brett ---------- From: Paul, Brett Subject: Bamf [22] Baker's thoughts and words Saif asks the baker if he speaks, well, a variety of languages. At the end, the baker responds when Saif says: Sprekense Detuch? His eyes move quickly to Saif at this point, understanding showing on his face. "Ya, ish spresha doitsh. Ish dashte do kuntest nisht. All zo, darfish een vas ho'n?" The baker's language is obviously German. Saif attempts to break the language barrier telepathically, but seems too distracted to focus properly. Marshall, having heard Saif's words, says, "Brota." The baker nods, and busies himself putting a loaf of bread out on the counter and slicing it. It looks like a 2-foot long sandwich roll. He rolls it in some kind of paper and hands it over to Marshall. "Sonst nosh vas?" He says, looking expectantly at you all. Saif hands the man a 5-coin. The man takes it and returns four 1-coins to you, saying "Dan ka! Sherness abend!" As you walk outside the baker's shop, you see a man wearing a white, buttonfront shirt, wearing a silver pin on the left side of his shirt (on his chest). The man is wearing a sword on his belt. None of the other people in the town seem to be carrying a weapon of any sort. Dana's eye catches a sign on the middle of the next block and says, "Oooh - look, a cheese shop!" (Please keep the Monty Python references to a minimum.) Also, across from the bakery is a coffee house. Between you and the cheese shop is a barber and some homes. Most of the buildings are single or two story, apparently made so that shopkeepers can live above their shops. Now that you are looking more closely at the buildings, you see a larger building ahead on the left that is apparently the town hall. Next to the town hall (on the near side) you see a couple statues, and between them, you see a hangman's gallows. There's also a pub on the corner here. If anyone is interested, I will be putting together an electronic map and post it to my web page, probably some time tomorrow. It won't reveal more than you've seen so far. - Brett ---------- From: Saif[SMTP:saif@xmission.com] Subject: Re: Bamf [22] Baker's thoughts and words > His eyes move quickly to Saif at this point, understanding showing on > his face. "Say, do you have any Bree?" > Next to the town hall (on the near side) you > see a couple statues, and between them, you see a hangman's gallows. While observing the gallows Saif mutters "I guess that is law with a capital "L"." Turning to the others Saif says "How about we get back to the others? In fact, why don't we buy a few more loaves of that fresh bread and take it to them. I'm sure the are just as hungry for good food as we are. We can also check and see if any of them speak German. This could be interesting - me sounding out written words and somebody else trying to translate." Barring any objections from Dana or Marshall, Saif will do the above (buy 2 more loaves of bread and then head back to where the others are.) At some point during the proceedings, I'll try to find a common language--we'll start with English, then try Spanish (I really only speak survival Spanish, but I can only read French--and not too well at that...) First things first: "No sprechen deutsch." This should come out with a horrible midwestern accent--I never was going to get truly fluent in any languages. :) First I'll try, "Do you speak English?" Then, "Ustedes hablan espanol?" > One takes a leather > strap and ties Brady's wrists together with some sort of handcuff-knot. > Brady finds himself unable to move his arms apart. "Congratulations, Brady, you've been identified as the 'threat'. :)" > The leader is waiting for the > rest of you to follow, one sword in hand, and Brady's sword in his > scabbard. He seems to want you to bring your stuff. "Hmmm, they never picked up on the sling I've got." As we collect our gear, I'll try to leave an obtrusive mark on the ground in the shape of an arrow pointing the direction I think we're going to taken back to town. Hopefully if Dana's group sees it, they'll have an idea what happened. Personally, I'll make sure I get all the books together. If we take any breaks, I'll study the Latin text, in hopes of finding a tie in to understanding German...Almost too afraid to try anything overt and get branded as a witch or something. Uggh. Oh right wrong faith... darn always get confused.... Seriously, I am a little worried at this point. Since they didn't behead me upfront I figure I'll live the day out, but I am not in the habit of dying for crimes I don't understand or remember committing... I start praying for help (in the general HELP yelled to God in hopes of a speedy and accurate response) More to the point, I will pray that I might understand the language of these men so we might make peace among all of us. (Check I Corinthians 12-14. Understanding other languages is biblical, neat huh?) Otherwise, I will be relatively quiet and try to look meek. Brady P.S. If I do gain understanding, then I will try to figure otu what I did.
